global competences for a better education

Introducing the first policy report of UA-Talent-UP: Global competences

The UA-Talent-UP project is excited to present the first policy report on fostering global competences in education and workforce development. This report represents an important step toward understanding the challenges, opportunities, and strategies needed to equip individuals with the skills required to navigate an increasingly interconnected and complex world.

Why Global Competences Matter

In today’s fast-changing global landscape, the ability to communicate across cultures, think critically, adapt to new challenges, and act ethically is more important than ever. The European Union has long recognized the significance of these skills in fostering inclusive economic growth, innovation, and social cohesion. Yet, despite growing awareness, integrating global competences into education and workforce training still faces significant barriers, including unequal access to resources, limited teacher training, and rigid curricula.

At the same time, new opportunities are emerging. Digital transformation, open educational resources (OERs), virtual mobility programs, and the green economy present innovative ways to bridge gaps and expand access to global competence education. The UA-Talent-UP project is committed to identifying these opportunities and ensuring that global competences are at the heart of future education and training policies.

Key Highlights from the Report

Our first policy report offers a comprehensive framework for integrating global competences, outlining six key areas:
Communicative and collaborative competences – Enhancing cross-cultural teamwork and digital collaboration.
Cultural and global awareness – Promoting intercultural understanding and respect.
Critical thinking and problem-solving – Encouraging innovation and adaptability.
Digital skills – Ensuring responsible and effective use of technology.
Self-management skills – Developing resilience and lifelong learning habits.
Global ethics and social responsibility – Embedding sustainability and ethical decision-making in education.

In addition to defining these competences, the report identifies barriers to implementation and provides actionable policy recommendations, including:
🔹 Reforming education to integrate interdisciplinary, project-based learning.
🔹 Investing in teacher training to support educators in delivering competence-based lessons.
🔹 Expanding lifelong learning opportunities, such as microcredentials and digital training.
🔹 Securing sustainable funding through public and private partnerships.
🔹 Developing robust evaluation systems to measure progress effectively.

A Work in Progress – Share Your Input!

This report is not a final product—it is a work in progress, meant to evolve through collaboration, not only from our experience during the project. We invite policymakers, educators, industry leaders, and students to provide their feedback and share perspectives on how we can improve and implement these recommendations effectively.

Share your thoughts with us at uatalentup@upsa.es. Let’s work together to build a more inclusive, adaptable, and globally competent education system for the future!
